McKeesport, January 24, 2013 – State Sen. Jim Brewster has been unanimously elected vice-chairman of the bipartisan, bicameral Legislative Budget and Finance Committee.
“I am pleased with my new position on this important committee that helps foster legislative efficiency, accuracy and accountability,” Brewster said. “I see this as an opportunity to better measure the performance of state programs and services, streamline expenditures and establish reliable baseline accuracy for much of the research that drives legislative debate.”
Established in 1959, the 12-member committee conducts studies, makes recommendations aimed at eliminating unnecessary expenditures; promotes state government efficiency; and assures that state dollars are being used in accordance with legislative intent and law.
To achieve these goals, the legislative Budget and Finance Committee conducts a wide range of research activities pertaining to the operation and performance of state-funded programs and agencies.
“In these difficult economic times, it is imperative that we invest state revenue wisely and that programs and services operate effectively and cost efficiently,” Brewster said. “Striving to achieve more with less should be a legislative standard, not some occasional house cleaning effort.”
First elected to the Senate in 2010, Brewster also serves as Democratic chair of the Senate Committee on Urban Affairs and Housing. He is also a member of the committees on Transportation, Banking and Insurance, Community Economic and Recreational Development, and Game and Fisheries.
