Brewster Honors Clairton Bears High School Football Team and Coach
Harrisburg, May 7, 2013 – State Sen. James Brewster today honored the Clairton Bears High School football team and their coach Tom Nola for winning four consecutive state football titles. The team was represented by players Terrish Webb and Titus Howard.
“I am pleased to welcome players Terrish Webb and Titus Howard, as well as coach Tom Nola to the floor of the Senate,” Brewster said. “I am equally pleased to honor these exemplary young men and their coach for overcoming extraordinary odds to achieve academic and athletic success. Everyone in southwestern Pennsylvania is a fan of Clairton football.”
Despite a district enrollment rate of just 766 students, Webb and Howard have accepted scholarship offers to attend the University of Pittsburgh along with their teammate, Tyler Boyd. At least 7 other seniors have also signed scholarship offers.
“I could not be more proud of these young men here today and their teammates,” Brewster continued. “It takes exceptional fortitude to stay on the right path of academic and athletic success. I look forward to watching these young men enter college to continue their academic and football careers.”
The Clairton Bears accomplishments have included:
- 5 consecutive WPIAL Championships
- 4 consecutive PIAA Titles
- An ongoing 63-game winning streak -- a state record and current longest in the country
- Only team in state history to score 600 or more points in 4 consecutive seasons.
- Only WPIAL team to win 4 PIAA State Championships in a row.
- Only WPIAL team to win 6 WPIAL championships in 7 years.
The Bears have the 13th longest winning streak ever in the history of High School Football in America and have done so under the direction of their coach, Tom Nola, who has had an illustrious and storied career, amassing a record of 371 career victories, ranking second in state history for overall wins.
“I commend Coach Nola for the outstanding achievements of his team,” Brewster said. “His dedication and leadership has been a great asset to this team and Clairton high school as a whole. I am very proud of him.”
