Upgrades to McKeesport, Elizabeth Borough Intersections Funded, Brewster Says

McKeesport will receive $279,000 and Elizabeth Borough $120,800 for intersection and traffic signal improvements via PennDOT’s Automated Red Light Enforcement grant program, Sen. Jim Brewster said today.

The intersections slated for improvement include traffic signals at 5th Avenue and Romine Streets and Walnut and 9th Street in McKeesport, respectively. The intersections in Elizabeth selected for signal upgrades are at Market Street, Second and Third Avenues and McKeesport Road and Church Street.

“The new funds will allow improvements at intersections in McKeesport and Elizabeth,” Brewster said. “I am pleased these projects were funded because the grants are very competitive.

“More than 130 applications were received and many worthwhile projects will not receive funding this round.”

Automated red light enforcement was first authorized in 2004. In addition to improving safety, the program generates funding for municipalities to use to address traffic congestion, mobility issues and safety.

“There is no question that we can improve safety for the motoring public if we are able to upgrade our transportation network and help reduce intersection congestion and backups,” Brewster said.

Brewster is a member of the Port Authority of Allegheny County Board of Directors and has been a strong advocate for transportation funding.
