Brewster’s Student Government Day Scheduled for Friday at Penn State Greater Allegheny
McKeesport – May 8, 2014 – State Sen. Jim Brewster (D-McKeesport) will be hosting Student Government Day on Friday, May 9 at Penn State Greater Allegheny. This is the fourth time that Brewster has hosted the event for high school students from his senatorial district.
“Student Government Day is a wonderful opportunity for students from local school districts to learn from those who are making, administering and reviewing laws,” Brewster said. “Students have the chance to directly interact with policymakers, administration officials and others who are involved in developing legislation.”
“As part of the day, students will participate in a mock Senate session and have the chance to debate legislation and vote.”
The McKeesport area senator said there are 10 schools with 76 students who have indicated they will attend.
The schools that are scheduled to participate include:
- Auberle;
- Boyce Campus Middle College High;
- Clairton High School;
- Kiski Area High School;
- Pittsburgh Jobs Corps Center;
- Plum Senior High School;
- Serra Catholic High School;
- South Allegheny High School;
- Springdale Jr.-Sr. High School;
- Woodland Hills High School
Brewster said he looks forward to hosting the session because it is a unique learning experience for the students and the panelists because they both gain from the exchange of perspectives about key issues.
The senator said the day is split into panel discussions with professionals who detail their role and responsibilities in government. The panelists are able to share their views on how legislation is crafted.
The panel this year will include 32 officials, representatives from state, county and local government and government relations professionals.
The topic to be discussed this year is draft legislation that would put a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing.
